Wonder Woman

Well, ticket prices being what they are, plus my ability to smell out a stinker movie based on the preview. I am very selective on the movies I see in theaters, and here we go again with the super hero genre. Is this movie the mega hit DC comics needed, or was it another super let down? Let find out:

Wonder Woman- Wonder Woman was created by the American psychologist and writer William Moulton Marston, and artist Harry G. Peter. Marston and his wife Elizabeth's cohabitant, Olive Byrne, is credited as being his inspiration for the character's appearance. Marston drew a great deal of inspiration from early feminists, and especially from birth control pioneer Margaret Sanger. The character first appeared in All Star Comics #8 in October 1941 and first cover-dated on Sensation Comics #1, January 1942. The Wonder Woman title has been published by DC Comics almost continuously except for a brief hiatus in 1986.

Plot- You live through the origin story of Diana, Princess of Themyscira (Gal Gadot), home to the Amazons. The amazons were created by Zeus to help guide man through love and strength. Unfortunately, men's hearts were corrupted by Zues' son, Ares, and Ares wants to destroy the world of man through war. During World War I, a pilot named Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes on Themyscira, and this is when Diana learns about man and the outside world. She vows to help him to stop the war, because she knows Ares is the cause of it.

This movie had some serious charm to it, especially when Wonder Woman enters our world, and she's so naive to how women were treated in those times. Her reactions to those men are priceless. Gal Gadot, even though, this poor lady received so much hatred after being casted as Wonder Woman. She owns this part! The fight scenes were top notch, watching her kick nazis butt on the war front. There was quite a bit of CGI, but it was forgivable. Chris Pine's and Gal Gadot's chemistry was perfect, and much of the charm in this film came from their interactions.

Final Verdict- 9.5/10, this is the smash hit for the summer. Highly recommend to see this theaters! Its got action, humor, the total package.

Suicide Squad

It has been many weeks since I have reviewed anything in theaters; because, there was nothing worth spending money to see, and I work hard for the cash.... that's why I review these films to save your money as well. So many block buster flops this past July, which I knew by the trailers those movies would be trash, but finally after waiting since last November this film as come out. Was it worth the wait, or did I want to commit suicide after watching it? Lets dive in:

Suicide Squad- Originally titled, Task Force X in DC comics printed in 1987 with a different cast of villains. When the new 52 came along in 2011, the comic was renamed Suicide Squad with most of the popular DC villains known today. It was an original concept to force meta-human villains to do impossible missions for the side of good. The comics really gave a better back ground to each character, making them far more than just the two-bit crooks they were in other titles.




Plot- Government official Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), wants to put together a team of meta-humans, she feels she can control to due her very bidding to service her country. The purpose of this is in case there is an evil Superman, Miss Waller will have her counter super team. One of the members of the team goes rogue, and begins their attempt to destroy the world. The squad is sent to stop this villain, even if they want to or not.


Here is the question, how do you have character development for each of the members of the team, and still have a well paced movie? "Suicide Squad" does this beautifully! Many films should take notes. Each character had a story to tell, and yes, the flash backs were small, but they got to the point and were heart felt. You can see each one of these villains paid in more ways for their crimes. The emotions were there, when some of the characters wanted to atone for their mistakes. They appeared as humans, with dreams of their own.... not that asshole you want Batman to stomp out. You could relate to them, hell, before the movie is over you're rooting for them! That's THE biggest reason why this film works so well. Not to mention the casting was so so so well done.


Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), and Joker (Jared Leto) steal the show every scene they were in, and the big question loomed over the film's head from start to finish. Was Jared Leto a better joker than Heath Ledger? Honestly, it doesn't matter because the Joker was reinvented every time he went against Batman. He is that deranged of a character! Yes, Jared Leto played an excellent Joker.




Final Verdict- 9/10, finally, a fantastic film for the summer. Good see this movie! The acting and action scenes are so well done.


A few more movie I might have to see before the summer block buster season comes to a close. Until then this is Phil Goes to the Movies, so you don't have to!

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Hey, everyone, I'm back to review all the big blockbusters this year. Guess what...Yours truly was invited to see a special screening of this movie, last night, even before the midnight showing premiering tonight. I am here to answer the question everyone is asking...Does this movie suck?  Lets dive into this review and find out:

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice- Well, it has been years of hatred towards this movie, as far back when the lead actors were revealed. On going jokes and mean internet comments galore. This movie is DC's way of catching up to the massive momentum Marvel has going for them in Hollywood.

Plot- Ok, there are like 5 plots going on at once in this movie. There's the Batman segment setting him up. Then the continuation of the "Man of Steel" following the huge battle in Metropolis. Followed by setting up Wonder Woman, and then there's the actual fight between Batman and Superman. Finally, the final plot the set up for the obvious Justice League movie in the future. Whew... Yeah, you really have no time to get any character development. Yes, its true we really don't need such a thing because we should all know these iconic characters already. Still, its important for a story telling point... this movie felt like I was on a roller coaster, and just zipping through it, no time to stop and really enjoy the good parts.

There are going to be many people eating crow about Ben Affleck playing Batman. Kevin Smith was right, Mr. Affleck was a great choice. Gal Gadot, also got tremendous flack for being cast as Wonder Woman, but she played a strong, enticing part... much like I would believe the real Wonder Woman would act. Then of course Henry Cavill, as Superman... still is a emotionless void. He could be replaced and I believe no one would notice honestly. Jesse Eisenberg, i wanted to reach into the screen and choke this moron... he was terrible...enough said.

Was it a great movie? It was good, but I was wishing it another movie most of the time.

Final Verdict- 5.5/10, Probably save your money on this one, or just go and watch the last 45 minutes of the movie.
